Every day is a perfect, sunny day in Kauai, HI, and we have three scenic drives on our island that if you haven’t taken them yet, you should. Then, open the windows and sunroof or lower the convertible roof and enjoy the roads and breathtaking Hawaiian scenery on the following routes.
Kuhio Highway – Route 560 – North Shore
Kauai’s north shore rivals Oahu’s north shore and this scenic drive is sure to please you and your passengers. You’ll begin the drive on Kuhio Highway (Route 560) at Hanalei – maybe have breakfast there – and then drive along the scenic route all the way to Ke’e Beach. This is more of a road than a highway, and it’s the only way to you can visit Kauai’s Ha-ene community. Relaxing and gorgeous, you and your family will enjoy this scenic ride and have a great time at Ke’e Beach at its end.
Tree Tunnel Road
Let’s head south for these scenic drives. Officially called Maluhia Road, islanders have dubbed this thoroughfare Tree Tunnel Road because trees line both sides of the road and reach overhead to form what looks like a tree tunnel. This road follows Kauai’s south shore, and it gives you access to Kauai’s Koloa/Poipu region. This is only a three-mile route, so you’ll want to enjoy the short trip and then spend some time on the beautiful Kauai south shore. Don’t forget to pack plenty of sunscreen.
Waimea Canyon Drive
Whether you live in Kauai or are just visiting, you must spend time driving through Waimea Canyon and at Koke’e State Park. Waimea Canyon Drive takes you to Waimea Canyon but don’t be concerned once it turns into Koke’e Road; the two merge and you’re still on the correct route. This is a winding drive, but it isn’t too tough to navigate. It takes you as high as 4,000 feet, so bring a sweater. Head through Waimea Canyon slowly to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and stay the night at Koke’e State Park.
