I Think My Alternator Is Bad! How Can I Tell?

Did you know that a vehicle’s alternator generates between 13 to 14.5 volts? If it is generating less than that, you may begin to notice one or more of the problems listed below. Kauai Auto Repair advises that the best way to tell whether the alternator is dying is to test it to see how much voltage it is carrying. If you don’t feel comfortable doing that yourself, we can do it for you.

Accessory Failure

The alternator provides your vehicle’s accessories with the power they need. If it is going bad, you will notice some problems with the accessories. Accessories such as your power windows and seats may slow down; accessories such as your entertainment system and GPS may start to malfunction.

Battery Trouble

One of the alternator’s most important jobs is to charge the battery while it discharges. Every time you start your automobile and drive it, the battery discharges slowly. If the alternator is not charging it, you will end up with a dead battery.

Dim Lights

You may also notice that your vehicle’s lights are dimmer than normal. The headlights are the most noticeable, but you may also end up with a dim dashboard light and interior lights. A malfunctioning alternator can also make the lights brighter.

Growling Noises

If you hear growling noises coming from the engine, this is a sign that the alternator’s internal mechanisms are wearing down. If you hear whining sounds coming from the engine, this indicates a problem with the accessory belt; the belt that powers the alternator.

Hard Starting

If the alternator is having a difficult time keeping the battery charged, it may become more and more difficult to start your automobile. It may crank several times before it ignites. If the alternator has caused the battery to die, a jump-start may not get your vehicle running.

Stalling Frequently

Frequent stalls are also an indicator of an alternator problem in an indirect way. The engine control module tells the spark plugs when the fire and the alternator gives them the power to do so. If it is failing, it may not be powering spark plugs.

Warning Light

Finally, your dashboard might have an ALT or GEN light on it. If either of these lights illuminates, this is definitely a sign that you have an alternator problem. If you don’t have either of these lights on your dashboard, a battery-shaped light will turn on.

Don’t worry. Kauai Auto Repair in Lihue, HI, can help. Stop by our shop today for an alternator test.
